Most people have experienced environmental graphic design without knowing it had a name. It's the wayfinding system that moves you through a hospital without confusion, the supergraphic on a hotel lobby wall that stops you mid-stride, the dimensional lettering above a corporate reception desk that communicates exactly what kind of company you've just walked into before anyone in the room has spoken. EGD is the discipline of using visual communication to shape how people experience a physical space, and it operates at the scale of the building rather than the frame. TKOart has been executing this kind of work for over 30 years, long before the term became common currency in design circles. We serve clients across Los Angeles, Orange County, Las Vegas, and nationwide.

Environmental graphic design is a specialized discipline that integrates graphic design, architecture, interior design, and fabrication to communicate identity, aid navigation, and shape the sensory experience of a built environment. Its applications span signage and wayfinding systems, large-scale wall graphics, branded installations, dimensional typography, placemaking, and interpretive design. The discipline is also referred to as experiential graphic design, the preferred terminology of the Society for Experiential Graphic Design (SEGD), and the two terms are used interchangeably across the industry.
Where it differs from related disciplines is largely a matter of scope. Interior design determines how a space is laid out, finished, and furnished. Art consulting determines what goes on the walls. EGD determines how the entire environment communicates: what it says when you walk in, how it guides you through, and what you understand and feel at each point along the way. That broader scope requires close coordination with the architectural and construction process, which is why it is most effective when introduced early in a project rather than applied at the end.
TKOart provides full-service environmental graphic design, from spatial strategy and concept development through fabrication, installation, and ongoing program management. Our services are designed to integrate with your project team at any phase.

The buildings people remember are rarely the ones with the most expensive finishes. They're the ones where someone thought carefully about what it should feel like to be inside.
EGD is not a single solution applied uniformly across building types. The priorities shift considerably depending on who uses a space, how they use it, and what the owner needs them to understand and feel. TKOart has worked across the following environments and approaches each with the specific demands of that sector in mind.
Corporate & Workplace. In corporate environments, EGD serves two distinct audiences: employees who inhabit the space daily and clients or partners who visit it. For employees, the priority is reinforcing culture, aiding orientation, and creating an environment that reflects the organization's standards. For visitors, first impressions carry disproportionate weight, and a well-executed reception area communicates competence and intentionality before anyone in the room has spoken.
Hospitality & Hotels. Wayfinding that reduces confusion, lobby installations that generate social media reach, and branded environmental graphics that give a property a distinct visual identity are all components of effective hospitality EGD. We have worked in this sector for the duration of our practice and understand the operational constraints that make it uniquely demanding.
Retail & Mixed-Use. In retail and mixed-use environments, EGD influences behavior by moving people through a space efficiently, drawing attention to anchor tenants, and creating the kind of atmosphere that extends dwell time. In multi-tenant developments, it also provides the unifying visual layer that makes a collection of uses feel like a coherent destination.
Healthcare & Wellness. Healthcare EGD demands particular attention to wayfinding clarity, ADA compliance, and the psychological impact of the visual environment on patients and families. We approach this sector with the rigor those stakes require.
Education & Cultural Institutions. Universities, museums, libraries, and cultural centers require EGD that serves a wide range of users simultaneously, from first-time visitors to daily occupants, from children to researchers. Interpretive design, identity systems, and donor recognition programs are all common components of institutional EGD work.
Entertainment & Venues. Arenas, theaters, casinos, and experiential destinations operate at a scale and intensity that makes EGD both more complex and more consequential than in most other building types. TKOart's background in the entertainment industry is directly relevant here, having designed for environments where the visual experience has to perform for thousands of people at once and where there is no margin for execution failures.
TKOart is not a signage company that expanded into branding, nor a branding studio that added production as an afterthought. We are an art consultancy with over 30 years of experience delivering complex visual programs in demanding environments, and that history gives us practical fluency in how buildings are actually built, how design decisions interact with construction schedules, and what it takes to install work at scale without compromising the design intent.
For projects requiring custom fabrication, we collaborate with TKOfx, a sister company that specializes in dimensional and sculptural environmental work. That relationship gives our clients access to a level of fabrication capability that most EGD firms cannot offer through standard vendor channels.
We work alongside architects, interior designers, and ownership groups as a coordinated part of the project team rather than a vendor brought in at the end. The work is better for it, and so is the process.

What is the difference between environmental graphic design and interior design?
Interior design addresses the spatial layout, furnishings, finishes, and material palette of an environment. Environmental graphic design operates within that context, adding the layer of visual communication: signage, wayfinding, graphics, typography, and branded installations. The two disciplines are closely related and most effective when developed in coordination rather than sequentially.
How is EGD different from what TKOart does on its hospitality and corporate art programs?
Art consulting and EGD share an objective in creating environments that are visually compelling and meaningful, but they differ in scope and method. Art consulting works within an existing architectural and design framework, selecting and placing works that enhance it. EGD is concerned with the broader visual system of the environment: how it communicates identity, how it guides movement, and how every surface contributes to a coherent experience. Many TKOart projects include elements of both.
At what stage of a project should we engage TKOart for EGD?
As early in the design process as possible. EGD decisions have implications for architecture, millwork, lighting, and construction sequencing, and bringing an EGD team in after the building is complete limits what is achievable while typically increasing cost. That said, TKOart works on retrofit and refresh programs for existing environments regularly and adapts our process to the constraints of each project.
Does TKOart work on projects outside California?
Yes. Our offices are in Irvine, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, and we work with clients across the United States, managing all logistics and installation coordination for out-of-state projects.
How long does an EGD program typically take?
Timeline depends on the scope and complexity of the project. A focused wayfinding program for a single-building corporate tenant may take three to four months from kickoff to installation, while a comprehensive EGD program for a large hospitality or mixed-use development may run twelve to eighteen months or longer, phased alongside the construction schedule. We provide detailed timeline projections at the outset of every engagement.
